De Wallen, also called Walletjes or Rosse Buurt, is the notorious red-light district in Amsterdam. It is situated between the canals and clearly marked on maps. It had existed in 14^th century and had been legalized, later developing in major tourist attraction. It is a kind of specific amusement park, containing sex shops, sex theaters, peep shows, a museum of erotic art, a cannabis museum, and numerous coffee shops selling various cannabis products.

The district consists of network of alleys with tiny one-room apartments with large glass windows. Working women rent them for 8 hour shift. Prostitution in Netherlands is legal in specially indicated places, it is licensed and tax-deductible as any other activity. There are representatives of all races and nationalities. Prices for 15 minutes are between 25-100 euros. Cameras are strictly prohibited, and there is special security, which may remove the film or even ask the visitor to leave.

There are many sex clubs, the most known among them are Banana Bar and Casa Rosso. Tourists queue up each night for thousands of video booths with 100 different channels. Video production on DVDs is widely available. Numerous brothels demonstrate astonishing level of infrastructure, providing escort services and enhanced security.

The most recent initiative was to construct a landmark monument, the idea belongs to Mariska Majoor, the head of Prostitution Information Centre. The district also houses many Chinese restaurants and clubs, and has a great deal of Chinese'owned businesses. De Wallen is not the only light red, there are plentiful in many parts of the city, but much more low-key.
