Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is the country's main airport. In 1980, 1981, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1990 and 2003 it was voted the best airport in the world, and held the title of Europe's best airport during 15 consecutive years. In 2005 direct flights were operated to more than 260 destinations in 91 countries.

It is one of the busiest European hubs, competing in passenger and cargo traffic with London-Heathrow and Paris - Charles de Gaulle. It is fourth in passengers and third in terms of cargo in Europe. Because of intense traffic some low-cost airlines moved their flights to Rotterdam and Eindhoven, but some of them, like SkyEurope, easyJet and BMI Baby continue to operate from Amsterdam.

Schiphol is the home base for KLM (Royal Dutch Airlines). The airport has 5 main runways, and one used mainly by general aviation aircraft. Plans for construction of the seventh runway are already being elaborated. One large terminal is split into three departure halls, the latest of them constructed in 1994. The engineering and design work deserves high appreciation. It is the lowest of major airports. The Air Traffic control tower, with the height of 101m, is based 3 m below the sea level.

The airport has large shopping areas. Schiphol Plaza is a large shopping mall before customs, thus open not only for travelers, but for citizens. Food Village is and extensive supermarket operating until midnight seven days a week.

Schiphol is served with Nederlanse Spoorwegen, the main state railway transportation provider, the station is located just underneath the terminal.
