Amsterdam Netherlands Amsterdam metro

Amsterdam Metro is operated by Gemeentelijk Vervoerbedrijf (GVB). The institution is also in charge of the city trams, ferries and many bus lines. All of them use national strippenkaart (transport pass) system, and tickets for one kind of transport are valid for another. Significant part of the network runs over ground and is actually a combination of metro and light rail.

The construction of metro system began in 1968, replacing many of the existing tram lines. The network acquired its present form in 1997, when the Ring Line was completed. In 2002 the construction of the North/South line was initiated. It will connect the northern districts with Cenraal station and Zuid Station, which is planned to replace Centraal as the main transport hub. The project is scheduled to be completed in July 2012, and probably extended to the Schiphol Airport in future.

There are three main lines in the metro system: the Eastern line, the Amstelveen line and the Ring line. The eastern line runs between Amsterdam Centraal and the southeastern suburbs of the Amsterdam Zuidoost  and Bijlmermeer. The Amstelveen line connects southern suburbs with Centraal Station and the Ring line encircles the city, connecting south-east and west districts.

The tram line to  IJburg in the east was originally planned to be a metro line, a short tunnel was built to connect it with the Centraal Station.  But that time a new tram line was constructed to serve this direction, so the tunnel was abandoned. Now appear interesting ideas to refurbish it and use as a part of museum of chocolate. There are still plans for the tram to IJburg to be upgraded to metro and extended to new residential areas of the nearby city of Almere.
