Amsterdam Netherlands Amsterdam tram

Amsterdam has highly developed system of public transportation, especially through its growing suburbs. The city is not very big and thus even easier to get around. The streets are narrow and parking places scarce, so there are relatively few private automobiles. The 16 tram lines of central Amsterdam are principal means of getting around the downtown. The area is dominated by cyclists and pedestrians, tram riding is municipally encouraged to prevent traffic overloading in the streets.

The streets that have the tram lines generally have the tracks in a semi-private right of way which is separated by a small curb from the automobile traffic. This allows fast tram traffic except for main junctions or streets where there are no distinctively marked tram tracks. The separate ways can also be used by diesel buses and taxis.

Centraal Station is the terminal point for 11 of the 16 tram lines (and 3 of the 4 Metro/Sneltram lines). The station is a conjunction of two main thoroughfares: Damrak and Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal. The system is operated with the Damrak lines (4, 9, 16, 24, 25) terminating in a four track terminal area on the east side of the Stationsplein, and the N.Z. Voorburgwal lines (1, 2, 5, 13, 17) terminating in a four track terminal area on the west side.

The projects are being elaborated to provide crossover between these divisions on Prins Hendrikkade, but they are not initiated yet. Tram lines run to all major tourist attractions, and have stations over three main canals. Leidseplein, the central square, is very busy traffic intersection, served by numerous tram lines.

Tickets can be purchased from the driver or included in the Amsterdam Card. The trams stop operating around 11.30 pm, but night buses run longer. Trams are so popular, that the city even has special Tram Museum, where the history of the city tram system is showcased.
