The Coptic Orthodox Church and Lent

The Coptic Orthodox Church and Lent

Our Preparation During Lent

This Sunday's Gospel was the story of the Samaritan Woman. This gospel is read to show us that there is always hope. God never forgets us. In fact, He would do anything to bring us back to him. This story is presented to us in the Gospel of St. John (fourth book of the New Testament) chapter 4, verses 1 through 42. If you read this story, you can see the grace which Jesus brings to each and every one of those who listen to Him. It starts off by saying that in order for Jesus to get to Galliee from Judea, He had to pass through Samaria. He went to an area where there was a well, which Jacob had given to his son Joseph. It was then about twelve noon. The people of the town would usually draw their water early in the morning to avoid the blistering heat of noon time. Jesus knew, however, that this woman who was a sinner would get her water during this time of the day. Why?.... Well, this woman was an adulterous woman, and if she was to draw water during the morning, she would have to endure the condesending talk of the rest of the women. This is a very important part of the story. This shows to us that the whole world could reject someone because of something that he has done, yet even if the whole world was against this person, God would still accept his/her confession and repentance. This is important in two ways. First, if it is that you are rejected by others because of your history of sin, or any other reason, do not loose hope. Just as Jesus sat there in the tremendous heat of the afternoon and waited for the Samaritan woman, He will also wait for you. Jesus is always there, knocking on the door of your heart, and it is only by you yourself opening your heart to Him that He will enter. Secondly, this could apply to those who are the ones that reject the others. Now, don't say that this doesn't apply to me before you make sure it really doesn't. If you think about it, almost every single one of us has had someone in their life that they have pre-judged. Someone who, just because they may ahve done unjust things in their life before, we say that we don't want to be near them, and we would purposely stay away from them and avoid them. This is not the way Jesus wants us to be. He wants for us to help all those who are in need, to reach out to such people, to even just offer them comfort. Just like He did with the Samaritan woman. Now remember, I am not just saying this to you, but it also applies to myself. There are times when even the best of people do things that they regret, and I certainly am not even 1% as good as those people.

I hope that I will keep updating this page to the end of lent, and if all goes well, till the beginning of the next season of lent.

Remembering that this is a season of preparation for the Feast of the Ressurrection, I would like for all those interested to try to abstain from certain foods or materialistic needs which we can do without.

I hope that you keep checking this page for updates, and Thank You For Coming.
